Just over a week after launching a smart rice cooker, Xiaomi has officially entered the toy business in partnership with Hasbro. The handset maker has announced a new crowdfunding campaign to manufacture a cool Transformer robot warrior which turns into a Mi Pad 2.
The new Xiaomi Soundwave: Mi Pad 2 toy is made up of Lego-like parts which when assembled correctly turns into a gold Transformer. It’s priced at a very reasonable CNY 169 which converts to approximately Rs 1738 or $26. Unfortunately, the device is only available in China as of now.
Xiaomi plans to ship the Mi Pad 2 Transformer on May 13 once the crowdfunding process gets done. It’s received over CNY 620399 worth of funds so far, 367% over its target amount. Needless to say, the toy doesn’t actually double up as an actual working tablet.
Samsung hasn’t even gotten around to making a foldable phone yet, so it’s safe to assume the technology to make a functional device out of toy parts is yet to exist. Still, it’s hard not to envision a future where such a contraption is possible. Going by the enthusiasm for the campaign, Xiaomi has definitely tapped into some previously unknown market potential for gadgets which turn into robots.
The announcement of the new Transformer coincides with Xiaomi’s 6th birthday. The brand is celebrating its anniversary in India right now via a day-long Mi Fan Festival. While the Mi Pad 2 toy is not up for sale here, you can buy an actual working Mi Pad through the occasion and get a pair of Mi In-Ear Headphones Basic free.
You can participate in the Mi Fan Festival by heading over to Xiaomi’s website.
