Xiaomi hits the UK with flagship Mi 8 Pro in tow

Xiaomi’s officially arrived in the UK and brought along an entire ecosystem of products with it. The China-based company has been courting the European market for a few months now and the UK is its next big step into global expansion.

In terms of availability, Xiaomi is opening a brick-and-mortar store in London on 18 November. It’s also vending its goods through its own UK website, Amazon UK, Carphone Warehouse, Three, Dixon’s PCworld, Gomobiles, Very, Mobile phones direct, Argos, and John Lewis.

Xiaomi hasn’t announced any new products, choosing to bring its existing portfolio directly from China. The most prominent of the lot is the Mi 8 Pro. The flagship device came out in its home country back in May 2018 as the Mi 8 Explorer Edition and its gotten renamed as part of its international launch.

The Mi 8 Pro is priced at CNY 3699 (roughly Rs 38759) in China and £499 (approx Rs 47388) in the UK for its 8GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM model. It’s anybody’s guess if the brand will bring the device to India eventually. The company hasn’t launched its flagship smartphones in the nation for a while now.

The biggest highlight of the Mi 8 Pro is its under-display fingerprint scanner, allowing it compete directly with the OnePlus 6T. The Xiaomi device has a unique transparent back design as well. It should be noted that the Snapdragon 845 processor seen is not the actual SoC. The real chip is buried underneath.

Xiaomi told The Verge that the part seen underneath the cover is an actual working component which is part of the mainboard. It’s just not the Snapdragon chipset it appears to be. Other products up for sale include the £329 Pocophone F1, £99 Redmi 6A, £249 Mi 8 Lite, £459 Mi 8, £249 Mi A2, £179 Mi A2 Lite, £219 Redmi Note 6 Pro, and £26.99 Mi Band 3.
