Xiaomi has begun releasing teasers about a mysterious new phone coming in January 2019. We don’t know much about it yet, but the brand’s President, Lin Bin, has shared a photo to reveal one key detail – the device will have a 48MP rear camera.
Naturally, a lot of people assumed he was talking about the Mi 9. However, My Drivers (via GizmoChina) claims that Xiaomi is actually releasing a Redmi smartphone with a 48MP snapper. The Redmi series is part of the company’s affordable lineup, so throwing in a 48MP sensor into the mix will certainly be interesting.

However, doing so could also raise prices. The upcoming handset may cost more than CNY 2000 (roughly Rs 20913). That’s a bit high for the Redmi series, but having a 48MP shooter around would naturally raise costs a bit. Plus, it seems like the brand is going to opt for a fancy LCD display with a hole for the selfie camera.
Samsung’s already debuted this design with the Galaxy A8s and rivals like Huawei are set to follow suit this month. It makes sense for Xiaomi to participate in the trend as well. Its device is apparently going to have an impressive screen-to-body ratio, but with a thick chin.
This seems to be the general pattern among these mid-range punch hole-style phones. Hiding the bottom bezel would add to the expense and Xiaomi wouldn’t want that. The 48MP lens might be accompanied by a super wide-angle lens and another unknown lens, probably a telephoto one.
Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright CM1 48MP sensor and Sony’s IMX586 48MP sensor are both being bandied about as possible candidates for the Redmi smartphone. The former costs less, making it a more likely choice. The Snapdragon 675 processor might be running inside since it includes support for a 48MP camera.
Taking a closer look at the image shared by Bin, it looks like this could be the first Redmi device with a glass back. The series has looked the same over the years, so it’ll be nice if Xiaomi does something to shake things up a bit.
