The Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite are here, finally bringing months of anticipation and leaks to an end. The Android One-running pair got unveiled at a global launch event in Spain and is set to hit 40 countries starting this month. Both will get at least 2 years of OS updates and monthly security updates.
To recap, the Mi A2 is the international version of the Mi 6X and the Mi A2 Lite is the international version of the Redmi 6 Pro. The global models skip MIUI in favor of pure Android Oreo. You can tell the two apart based on the display. The former doesn’t have a notch on its 5.99-inch FHD+ 18:9 display, while the latter has a notch on its 5.84-inch FHD+ 19:9 screen.
Just like the Mi 6X, Xiaomi has removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from the Mi A2. This will be sure to annoy people who like having the port around. They’ll have to make do with the USB Type-C to Audio adapter which the company is bundling or switch to wireless audio accessories.
The Mi A2 Lite keeps the 3.5mm headphone jack around, but sticks to an old-fashioned microUSB port. There’s a huge difference between the duo in terms of battery capacity as well. The Mi A2 has a 3010mAh battery and the Mi A2 Lite has a 4000mAh one.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Camera Upgrades
The Mi A1 notably has a 3080mAh battery, so the Mi A2 is a bit of a downgrade in the fuel department. It has plenty of upgrades in other areas though. For instance, the new handset has gotten equipped with a 20MP f/1.75 Sony IMX376 + 12MP f/1.75 Sony IMX486 dual camera setup.
The Mi A2 automatically judges which lens to use as per the environment. The 20MP one is ideal for low-light settings thanks to its 4-in-1 Super Pixel and 2um pixels. The 12MP one is suited for daytime shots with its 1.25um pixels. The front-facing 20MP snapper is the same as its twin on the back, except it has an f/2.2 aperture.
