Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2S has come and gone without the rumored in-display fingerprint sensor which a couple of leaks had suspected would be present. This has left many wondering just when the company will catch up to the likes of Vivo and Huawei with its own implementation.
XDA Developers has an answer to this, claiming that an upcoming Xiaomi flagship, possibly the Mi 7 Plus, will come bearing an under-display fingerprint scanner up front. The journey to this conclusion is a bit complicated, involving a ton of deep diving into firmware files and assessing of rumors.
The Mi 7 has apparently been delayed because Xiaomi decided to go back to the drawing board for the smartphone. There are 2 firmware branches for the device at the moment namely dipper and dipperold. The former is the version currently in development and the latter is the scrapped prototype.
It seems dipperold’s firmware contains several hints that Xiaomi was working on an under-display fingerprint reading solution, as evidenced by the mockup above. However, dipper does not include the same references. This could mean that Xiaomi was intending to include the tech into the Mi 7, but gave up mid-way.
This doesn’t mean the under-screen fingerprint sensor won’t show up on another Xiaomi phone though. The Mi 7 Plus is a strong candidate for this, but it could easily be some other flagship phone. We do know that this smartphone is code-named ursa and it might have a Snapdragon 845 processor, 4000mAh battery, a notch-style OLED display, and optical zoom skills.
