Accessing Zip files may not necessarily require a desktop PC anymore, as the WinZip for iOS app has made its debut on the Apple App Store. The application meant for the iPhone and the iPad, is now available absolutely free of charge.
The makers of the Zip utility that allows file compression, encryption and sharing along with enabling data backup have introduced this app for the Apple platform. For starters, this newest member to the App Store will facilitate opening Zip files as well as Zip attachments directly from the email onto the mobile device. It allows users to browse through these Zip files and even multi-file attachments, without any hassles.
And as desired by most users, the encrypted Zip files are also supported by this latest software. The content from these files can be easily copied onto the clipboard to carry out further operations. Moreover, it extends support to files from most webmail options, which include the likes of Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail amongst others. The application also boasts of an easy-to-use interface optimized for the Apple smartphones and tablets while accessing and managing compressed files and folders.
File formats like .ppt, .pptx, .rtf, .txt, .doc, .docx, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .pdf, .xls and many more can be viewed through this tool. But compressing an iOS file will continue to require the help of a desktop computer system, mentions Engadget, who happened to catch sight of this piece of information on TUAW.
The WinZip for iOS can be downloaded from the Apple App Store for free.
