Windows Phone 8.1 update heralds the birth of another Siri rival – Cortana

The rumors were spot on; the fresh version of Microsoft’s operating system features a personal digital assistant named Cortana and many other traits which were being speculated. Ultra-customizable live tiles, new lock screen themes, fresh design changes and a lot more lies in store for users of the said platform.

If you’re a fan of Halo video games, you’ll know who Cortana is and you’ll also be pleased that the new personal digital assistant software from Windows Phone 8.1 will be voiced by the same actor who plays the character in those games – Jen Taylor. Meant to replace the search function form the OS, it will be able to it place calls, send messages, take notes, give reminders, set alarms and more, all through your voice commands.

Cortana will keep learning things about you based on your commands to deliver tailored results the next time. This personal digital assistant to rival the likes of Siri and Google Now will be launched in beta form in the US at first, and will makes its way into the other markets later on.

As had been rumored, Windows Phone 8.1 lets you place your photographs on its live tile interface. The software will also introduce fresh lock screen themes, apart from an Action Center which lets you easily access your notifications as well as toggle Wi-Fi, Flight Mode, Bluetooth and Rotation Lock settings.
