WhatsApp will now let you share your real-time location

WhatsApp Live Location

WhatsApp is following in the footsteps of Facebook Messenger, Google Maps, and Telegram by launching a Live Location feature of its own. As can be guessed by its name, the tool allows you to share your place on a map in real-time.

Live Location marks a big upgrade over WhatsApp’s previous static location sharing option. Instead of just marking where you are at a certain point of time, the new ability allows friends and family to see your progress as it’s happening. It’s a convenient way to keep track especially when there’s a large group of people involved.

Like WhatsApp’s other features, Live Location is also end-to-end encrypted so no one can spy on your travelling. To get started, you’ll have to tap on the attach button in Android or the plus symbol in iOS. ‘Share Live Location’ will be present as a new option under Location.

You can opt to give out your place on a map for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours. Once this is completed, you can type in an optional message and hit send. You’ll be able to stop it at any time. If more than one person starts beaming out their location, a single map will accommodate all of them, complete with tiny photo icons.

Live Location is set to be rolled out to both iOS and Android users across the world in the next few weeks. You can download WhatsApp via the Play Store or App Store.
