The ZTE Reef is water resistant, no guesses there if you’re going by the name. And Virgin Mobile will be picking up the handset as the first waterproof phone in its portfolio. While the device may not pack in high end specifications, anyone interested in a mid-range smartphone for a reasonable price could probably consider it.
It entails no contract plans since we’re talking about Virgin Mobile here and costs $149.99. You can pair the device with $35, $45 or $55 monthly plans, all three of which include 2.5GB of data per month. For a limited time period, the Sprint-owned carrier will also throw in a $70 bonus if you’re signing up for a new account.
Now that we’ve got all the budget-related concerns out for the way, here’s a look at the specifications – the Reef works on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 and sports a 1GHz processor. ZTE has embedded a 5MP camera onto its rear panel and a 1MP lens above the 4-inch touchscreen. The 3G capable smartphone’s IPX7 certification renders it waterproof for up to 30 minutes under 1 meter of water.
The rest of the features cover Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, up to 32GB of expandable memory and 9 hours of talk time via the integrated 1650mAh battery. It comes pre-loaded with Virgin Mobile ID packs and the life-changing (take our word for it, we don’t need to know too much about spelling anymore) Swype keyboard. The first mentioned offers a host of pre-packaged applications, wallpapers and so on.
This nondescript-looking handset is already up for grabs through Virgin Mobile.
