Sony Xperia Z and ZL India release date may be drawing closer

Xperia Z

We could get official confirmation on the Sony Xperia Z and ZL India release date very soon, considering that the phones have been listed on an online retailer in the country. We saw images of the phones initially leaked before their existence was confirmed at the 2013 CES which recently concluded and left us with a ton of new things to think about.

We knew the Xperia Z was coming in the first quarter of this year, and we even saw evidence that the phone, along with the ZL, might land at Indian fronts. Now the Sony devices have popped up on Infibeam, an online retailer in the country that deals with the sale of phones and tablets in addition to a bunch of other stuff.

ZL

The devices bring Sony’s camera capabilities to a smartphone, HDR video in particular. And while the former features the company’s Exmor RS image sensor, the latter has the Exmor R CMOS sensor. They also both boast of a 5-inch 1920 x 1080p capacitive display with the Bravia Engine 2 for clearer visuals.

The Z is dust and water resistant and will come in three colors including black, white and purple, while the ZL doesn’t feature in anything other than monochrome hues. The former is more than just a tallboy version of the latter, and even comes with a battery extension mode that shuts down apps in standby, extending life.

Both also have a 13MP camera with auto focus and LED flash capable of recording video in 1080p. Even the front-facing 2MP snapper is capable of capturing video in this resolution and can be used for video conferencing. The high-end smartphones run on Android version 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and get their power buttons shifted to the side.

They have 2GB of RAM and up to 16GB of in-built memory for storage needs, which can be expanded via a microSD card slot. Both also have a 1.5GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU that’s meant to keep tasks and applications running smoothly. They come with NFC technology for sharing with other enabled devices.

So now that the Sony Xperia Z and ZL are already up on an e-retailer in India, what does this mean in terms of a launch for the country? It could be soon and we’ll just have to wait and see what the Japanese manufacturer does in the time to come. Also, no official price for either device has been mentioned, although judging by other countries’ listings, it could cost as much as the Samsung Galaxy S3 or even the iPhone 5.
