WhatsApp to get call back, voicemail, ZIP file support soon

WhatsApp Android

WhatsApp has added quite a few features to its platform over the past few months including end-to-end encryption and text formatting. A recent report claims that the popular messaging app is now looking to focus on voice calling by adding call back and voicemail options.

The new WhatsApp features came to light via translation requests spotted by Phone Radar. As suggested by its name, the call back tool will allow Android and iOS users to get in touch with their friends after they get a missed call without having to open the app. Based on the report, there’s supposed to be a Call Back button in the notifications panel which will allow them to do so.

WhatsApp for iOS is also set to get a Record Voice Mail and Send Voice Mail button to record messages during voice calls. The additions will likely serve to reduce the divide between regular and VoIP calling and make the application more able to compete with other apps which offer similar services.

The report also asserts that video calling is going to hit iOS sometime soon. To recall, speculation about the feature came to light last year after photos of it in progress got leaked online. There’s hasn’t been a peep regarding the function since then.

Finally, WhatsApp looks like it’s going to add support for ZIP files. It’s already added document sharing to its list of abilities, so ZIP compatibility seems like the next logical step. Such files are especially useful in cases where the content is heavy as the format compresses data and effectively reduces internet consumption.

There’s no indication yet of just when the new WhatsApp features will roll out. We expect it’ll arrive over the next couple of weeks.
