As predicted a few weeks ago, Instagram has gone ahead and revamped its entire user interface and thrown out its classic logo in the process. The changes are already inspiring a mixed reaction from folks, with some condemning the transformation to others embracing it.
Instagram’s vintage camera icon has now been replaced with a more modern minimalist look. Even the symbols for Hyperlapse, Layout, and Boomerang have gone through the same redesign in an attempt to bring these logos up-to-date with current style trends in both Android and iOS.
While the old logo was beloved by most Instagrammers, the company’s head of design Ian Spalter says that the classic look was no longer reflective of the community. The new icon is the brand’s attempt at distilling the most prominent elements of the previous design namely the rainbow, lens and viewfinder into a simplified outline and gradient background.
This colorful theme doesn’t quite extend itself to Instagram’s new UI. The interface is now starkly black-and-white, all the better to highlight the color in the photos which users are sharing. Spalter thinks this will allow pictures and videos to take center stage without competing with the cool blue tones of yesteryear.
Instagram left no stone unturned with its reboot. Even the way people interact with the application is now different thanks to the design team paring interaction patterns down in favor of utilizing standard Android and iOS font, components and patterns to bring about a uniformity that was missing from the earlier UI.
Of course, many users liked the vintage-esque feel of the previous UI and icon and are less than happy with the push towards modernization. Instagram probably won’t change back to its old symbol now, so patrons will just have to get used to looking at a white square and dot where a camera used to be.
