The broadly expanding e-reader arena has opened doors for a string of innovations. Barnes & Noble further extends it by launching the PubIt!, a self publishing portal that enables independent writers and publishers to distribute their content. This self-service Web portal comes with no hidden costs, allowing qualified content owners to deliver their work across millions of new readers.
Barnes & Noble now adds tens of thousands of titles from numerous independent publishers and self-publishing writers who have pre-registered for the service. The titles have been incorporated into Barnes & Noble’s expansive eBookstore. The PubIt! content that is newly submitted will be put up for sale within 24 to 72 hours after upload.
“We’re delighted at the enthusiastic response we’ve received from thousands of independent writers and publishers who are eager to introduce their exciting works to a broader audience of readers,” said Theresa Horner, director, digital products, Barnes & Noble. “The launch of our PubIt! platform further reinforces our long-standing commitment to authors and writers, and offers a significant opportunity to provide an even greater selection of reading material to our millions of customers.”
PubIt! utilizes a Web-based platform, enabling publishers to independently make their accounts, upload eBooks and set the list price. They can also keep a track of their sales and payments. These titles can be priced between $0.99 and $199.99. PubIt! eBooks which are priced at or between $2.99 and $9.99 bring about 65 percent of the list price for sold content to publishers. Content priced at $2.98 or less, or $10.00 or more, gives publishers 40 percent of the list price.
Publishers’ intellectual property is said to be well-protected with Barnes & Noble’s digital rights management technology. It will be made available in ePub format. Those publishers with U.S. rights to the content can effortlessly upload the ePub files. On the other hand, their Microsoft Word, Txt, HTML or RTF file will be converted to ePub at no cost. Publishers can view how the content will be displayed on B&N’s e-reading devices with the Nook emulator.
On publishing an eBook through PubIt!, the content will be available through Barnes & Noble’s innovative Read In Store program, allowing B & N bookstore consumers the capability to browse the contents of eBooks for free. Barnes & Noble comes with e-mail support and an online community. PubIt! titles can be accessed with the company’s entire family of Nook products and software.
