Sony PSP Software Update v3.90 now available with Skype activation

At CES 2008, Sony broke the good news that all PSP owners would be getting the hugely popular Skype voice chat integration for their portable handheld gaming systems. Now, Sony has officially announced the immediate availability of the latest PSP software update version 3.90.

The newest software update version 3.90 will enable the lucky owners of the PSP Slim and Lite (PSP 2000 series) to make as well as receive phone calls via the telephony service Skype.

Using Skype, people will be able to make free calls over the Internet to other Skype users all over the world. If calls are made to landlines or mobile phones, then the Skype users will have to pay for that call obviously.

PSP owners will have to upgrade their devices to system software 3.90 to use Skype on the gaming device. They will have to register and can then proceed to talk using a headset and remote control.

Besides adding Skype functionality, the latest software system update 3.90 also adds the Go! Messenger Icon which allows gamers to use the video and voice chat. Besides this, a host of other things that will soon be available in February. So stay tuned!

It must be noted that the Skype functionality will also be available for the Sony PSP Slim and Lite (PSP 2000 series) and not older version of the PSP gaming system such as the PSP 1000 series.

As for the Go! Messenger functionality, it will be available with all PSP models, including the PSP 2000 and PSP 1000 series.
