Samsung has finally announced the rugged Galaxy S8 Active after numerous leaks gave away the existence of the handset. The phone will only be sold via AT&T at launch, but this exclusivity will be around for a limited period of time. That’s a new practice for the series since it usually stays tied to the carrier.
For now, you can pre-order the Galaxy S8 Active on August 8 and buy it from an AT&T store on August 11. You can opt to either pay $28.34 for 30 months or $849.99 up front. For that much, you’ll be getting most of what the Galaxy S8 offers in a more durable body.
The main aspects you’ll be losing out on are the Galaxy S8’s Infinity Display and curved sides, though the screen still measures 5.8-inch diagonally and outputs a 2560 x 1440p resolution in an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. In exchange, you’ll be getting a device that’s shatterproof, dustproof, and waterproof.

The Galaxy S8 Active is bound by a thick metal frame that features bumpers on every corner for added protection against shock, abrasion, twisting, and tilting. The back has gotten a tougher texture to ensure that it doesn’t slip out of your hand. Moreover, Bixby’s home screen displays lifestyle features like a barometer, compass and flashlight.
