Rumors so far have hinted that Samsung may go the Apple way and ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack for the Galaxy S8. Now a new report adds some further credence to this speculation by claiming that the brand is going to launch wireless in-ear headphones alongside its flagship handset.
According to SamMobile, Samsung currently has a number of Galaxy S8 prototypes under consideration, some with and some without headphone jacks. It’s not clear yet whether the new wireless accessories will be sold separately or as part of the package.
There’s also the possibility that Harmon audio tech will be featured in the wireless headset. Going against this theory is the fact that the company was bought by Samsung relatively recently. The acquisition might not see dividends so quickly as a result.
Launching a pair of wire-free headphones serves to strengthen the notion that the Galaxy S8 won’t have a headphone jack, though it can’t be seen as definitive proof. The brand already has a pair of cordless accessories to its name called the Gear IconX, so the likelihood of another one isn’t that far-fetched.
If the new speculation proves accurate, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple’s AirPods compare against whatever Samsung comes up with. The two are widely expected to launch competing flagship smartphones next year with advanced tech such as a fingerprint scanner underneath the display and an edge-to-edge OLED screen.
Another recent speculation had indicated that the Galaxy S8 would be sold with a separate S Pen stylus accessory, the first S series phone to do so. The handset is predicted to come out in April 2017 at an event in New York.
