Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 unveiled, optimized for rugged use

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2

The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 has just been officially unveiled and the company positions it as a durable mobile device suited to match users’ outdoor lifestyles. To that effect, it meets IP67 standards which means it can withstand dust and keep out water even when it is submerged.

The Galaxy Xcover 2 sports a 4-inch WVGA TFT display which puts out visuals at a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. It runs on Android Jelly Bean (v4.1) which should come as a refreshing upgrade from ICS or lower. On the back, there will be a 5MP camera capable of auto focus and assisted in picture-taking duties by an LED flash. The front houses a VGA webcam.

Ruggedness doesn’t stop at the IP67 certification. The device comes in a toughened shell and with a direct camera key allowing users to take pictures under water. And in keeping with its outdoor personality, it has Google Maps data pre-downloaded. Other connectivity features include A-GPS with GLONASS, Bluetooth v4.0 and Wi-Fi.

The phone may look less than menacing, what with it measuring 130.5 x 67.7 x 12 millimeters in dimensions and weighing about 148 grams, but it packs 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory which can be further expanded if needed. It can take a microSD card with a capacity of up to 32GB. Additionally, a 1GHz dual core processor makes its presence felt.

A 1700mAh Li-ion battery has been packed into the phone, but don’t be put off by numbers. The South Korean company says it can power up the rugged handset for 570 hours of usage. The device comes pre-installed with the Cardio Trainer Pro app and can also boast of S Voice for any gurgling vocal commands that might be barked out underwater.

There isn’t word yet on how much the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 will cost or when we might expect to see it, but with the MWC coming fast, more should be revealed of this rugged smartphone.
