With just hours to go before Samsung unveils its flagship Galaxy S8, a new leak has some fresh insight on how the brand’s new virtual assistant Bixby will work. Nearly every other aspect of the handset has been leaked at a rapid pace over the past few weeks, but the digital AI has been a bit of a mystery up until now.
As per a series of screenshots taken by Twitter tipster Ricciolo, Bixby can be activated by pushing the tool’s dedicated button or saying ‘Bixby’ out loud. The assistant requires an internet connection and a Samsung account to work. However, it may be available only in a couple of languages and certain skills might not be accessible depending on the region.
Other than doing what other AI platforms like Siri and Alexa can do, Bixby will apparently be able to conduct real-life image searches. Individuals would have to trigger Bixby Vision (symbolized as an eye) in the camera app and scan their surroundings or an object to get info about their location or online products.
For instance, people might be able to search for information about wine by simply scanning the wine label. This feature comes under the umbrella of a suite of services seemingly called Intelligent life. Bixby could further serve as a translation tool, letting users translate text captured on camera.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are emerging out of the shadows today at a Galaxy Unpacked event being held in New York at 11 am EDT or 8:30 pm IST.
