Samsung is set to unveil 3 Galaxy S10 variants this year. One is probably going to be an entry-level version with a non-curved 5.8-inch Infinity Display, the second may sport a curved 6.2-inch Infinity Display, and the third might feature a 6.44-inch curved Infinity Display.
SamMobile has some intriguing new information about the Galaxy S10’s basic model. It seems the handset might have its fingerprint scanner mounted on the side. Samsung’s never done anything like this before, but it’s not completely out the question.
Samsung Galaxy S10 Fingeprint Scanner
The rumor originates from South Korea, where The Bell claims that only the standard and premium Galaxy S10 iterations will carry an in-display fingerprint sensor. It looks like the 5.8-inch Galaxy S10 will be giving it a miss, understandable since the component will probably drive up costs astronomically.
What’s not as understandable is why the fingerprint reader has to be placed on the frame instead of in a more conventional place like the back. Perhaps Samsung wants to maintain uniformity between the trio and doesn’t want a fingerprint scanner interrupting the rear.
Both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 have their fingerprint reader at the back, to mixed reviews. The former especially received a lot of criticism for the part’s placement since it lead to the camera getting smudged all the time. At least this way there’s zero risk of the lenses getting attacked by fingerprint marks all the time.
If the rumor proves accurate, Samsung will be joining the likes of Sony, Motorola, and Vivo in placing fingerprint readers on the sides of their smartphones. Perhaps the design will become more popular if the entry-level Galaxy S10 turns out to be a hit.
We’ll find out the truth of the matter when Samsung’s annual launch event at the MWC 2019 kicks off in February. Stay tuned for more till then.
