Samsung is finally catching up with rivals Apple, Google, and Huawei in one key aspect – having a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit) in its flagship phones. The chip is what sets the iPhone and Pixel apart from the rest and it looks like the South Korean brand is planning to integrate it into the Galaxy S10 next year.

According to ETNews (via GSMArena), the Galaxy S10’s Exynos 9820 SoC is going to have a dual-core NPU inside. Sources claim it’s going to improve the handset’s AI (artificial intelligence) abilities by making it much faster. Having a separate unit devoted only to AI helps cut down on processing time significantly.

Samsung vs Apple vs Google

As an example, Apple’s A12 Bionic can conduct trillions of operations per second and Google’s Pixel Visual Core can do the same. The latter is particularly famed for the quality and speed of the Pixel series’ photography, so Samsung will have to bring its A-game if it wants to compete.

Tipster Ice Universe has some more details about Samsung’s plans. Apparently, the Galaxy S10 is going to utilize the world’s first 7nm EUV dual-core NPU chip. It’ll enhance the camera and work with the ISP (image signaling processor) for superior photos.

Apple does something similar with its new iPhones, using AI smarts to separate the subject from the background and applying portrait mode bokeh effects. Samsung could put its deep learning NPU to work by making it recognize images and process algorithms without overworking the main CPU.

Samsung actually came out with a new Exynos 9610 chipset in 2018 which had a neural network engine of its own to process snapshots, faces, and depth detection. It makes sense for the brand’s flagship phone to boast of something just like this.
