We’ve been hearing a lot about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship phones, with the biggest news being the addition of an in-display fingerprint sensor. Now a DigiTimes report is here to corroborate those rumors with the help of industry sources.
Insiders claim that Samsung will be adopting ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanning tech in a direct move to set itself apart from Apple and its Face ID technology. This will also help it compete better with Android rivals who favor optical fingerprint readers.
Samsung Galaxy S10 Speculation
It seems Samsung is reluctant to place orders for iris recognition chips. Both its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups have featured the biometric authentication tool, but it may not stick around next year. It was expected to, just in case customers prefer it to placing their fingerprint on the screen.
Now it looks like Samsung is going full steam ahead with its in-display fingerprint sensor. Unfortunately, not all the Galaxy S10 models will support it. The entry-level 5.8-inch Galaxy S10 may either get a rear-facing or side-mounted fingerprint scanner to keep costs low.
Both the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 and 6.4-inch Galaxy S10+ are expected to get bumped up to an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader. The company will probably increase shipments to 40 million units. The bigger pair will likely account for 34 – 36 million of those.

The report further asserts that Samsung will bless one high-end option in its Galaxy A and Galaxy Note series with an in-display fingerprint sensor. General Interface Solution (GIS) and O-film Tech are going to be the ones manufacturing the scanners for the company.
Many of Samsung’s Android competitors such as Xiaomi, Huawei and Vivo use Synaptics and Goodix’s optical in-display fingerprint scanners. More companies will probably hop on the trend in 2019, although it’s unclear which tech will prove to be more popular – optical or ultrasonic.
