Samsung Galaxy Note 8 goes official with dual cameras, Infinity Display

The wait for the Galaxy Note 8 is finally over, with Samsung ready to put the series’ explosive past behind it and move on with a new bezel-less flagship. It’s now up to consumers to decide whether they’re willing to forgive and forget.

Samsung’s certainly not holding back from giving them numerous reasons to do so. A massive 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display graces the Galaxy Note 8’s front. The similarity to the Galaxy S8 can’t be denied, but the former has a more boxy design with less pronounced curves at the top and bottom.

The Galaxy Note 8’s Edge Panel has gotten a new App Pair tool which lets users launch 2 apps in 2 windows at the same time, combining messaging and video or calling and notes. The S Pen has gotten upgraded as well, featuring a narrower 0.7mm tip and 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. In terms of abilities, it can now translate sentences, convert money, and jot down notes even when the screen is switched off.

There’s also a Live Message tool which allows for hand-drawn emojis, animated GIFs, and handwritten text on images. IP68 protection against dust and water should keep it safe from liquid damage. Two other holdovers from the Galaxy S8 era are Bixby and the fingerprint scanner at the back. It’s been placed at a distance from the dual cameras though, hopefully cutting down on accidental smudges.

Speaking of the dual cameras, Samsung claims the handset is the first smartphone in the world with two 12MP shooters equipped with OIS on both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Only the former gets the benefit of an aperture of f/1.7 and a Dual Pixel sensor with rapid autofocus. Both can take 2 photos simultaneously in Dual Capture mode, one in close-up and the other showing the entire background.

Interestingly, Samsung has come up with a Live Focus tool that lets people adjust the depth of field before a photo is even clicked. This can be changed after the snap has been taken as well. As for the 8MP selfie camera, it’s been blessed with smart autofocus and the same f/1.7 aperture.
