Samsung is rumored to be preparing for the launch of the next edition of the Galaxy J1, currently known as the Galaxy J1 (2016). The former was unveiled in February last year, which means the company may be looking to release its successor soon.
Giving some credence to this speculation is the leak of press renders of the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016). While the previous images of the phone only showcased it in 1 color, the new pictures officially confirm it will be available in black, white and gold. The design of the smartphone in the new photos is also consistent with what has surfaced online so far.
The renders, which were posted on Twitter by dedicated leakster @evleaks, shows that the black bezel of the Galaxy J1 (2016) is present on all the color variants. As for specs, Phone Arena reports that Samsung has equipped the handset with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and a slightly larger 4.5-inch display, as opposed to the 4.3-inch sported by its predecessor.

Samsung is still sticking with the WVGA 480 x 800p resolution of the older model for the Galaxy J1 (2016). There’s also an as-yet-unannounced 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos 3457 processor powering the phone, which is apparently the brand’s answer to the Snapdragon 410 chipset. The new SoC will be assisted in its tasks by 1GB of RAM and a Mali-720 GPU.
Overall, the Galaxy J1 (2016) is shaping up to be a significant upgrade over its previous variant, but still within the boundaries of the entry-level market segment. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for any more updates on the future handset as they come out till its official launch.
