Reliance Jio has finally gone live in India after what seems like centuries of waiting for it to go official. The network has slowly been growing in momentum ever since it was first announced, gaining customers rapidly over the past few months through enticing preview offers which gave away unlimited voice and data.
That spirit continues with the official unveiling as well, with Reliance Jio promising unlimited voice calls, 4G data, SMS, and access to Jio apps up till 31 December 2016 as part of its Free Welcome Offer. However, the initiative isn’t quite as unrestricted as it seems to be, since internet surfing is capped at 4GB per day.
Still, 4GB is quite a lot of data for one user in a day. After 31 December, users will only have to pay for data, an unheard-of concept. Prepaid packs start at Rs 19 and offer limitless voice calling (local, STD and roaming). Furthermore, Jio’s Unlimited at Night scheme lets subscribers browse the web without any charges from 2 am to 5 am.
As for the amount of internet they’ll be getting, the Rs 19 pack serves up 0.1GB of 4G and 0.2GB of Wi-Fi data through JioNet Hotspots. It should be noted that this bundle is only valid for 1 day and cannot be taken up as a first recharge by new consumers. Instead, customers will have to set their sights on the Rs 149 package.
This pack entitles them to 0.3GB of LTE data, 0.7GB of Wi-Fi data, and 100 free SMSes for up to 28 days. Moreover, all the schemes include a free subscription to Jio’s apps and services till December 2017. Reliance claims this bundle is worth Rs 15000 per year. However, people will still be charged data for accessing the applications.
Reliance Jio SIM cards are available to all and can be instantly activated via the eKYC process for Aadhaar card holders.
