The JioPhone 2 is headlining the major news coming in from Reliance Industries’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) today. This 4G LTE handset will deliver dedicated WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube apps, and carry an introductory price tag of just Rs 2999. Additionally, its makers have also announced that the aforementioned social apps will be making their way into the original JioPhone soon.
The two main highlights of the JioPhone 2’s hardware are its 2.4-inch horizontal display and its full QWERTY keyboard. The device will run the open source KaiOS, which features support for voice commands to launch apps. It’s even got a dedicated button for the voice assistant, apart from support for 24 Indian languages. Dual SIM slots are provided as well, but we’re not sure right now whether both the slots will offer 4G and VoLTE compatibility or not.
The JioPhone 2 isn’t much in terms of specifications. It’s got a 2000mAh battery at its core, which is quite large for a phone of this size. 4GB of expandable storage is on offer, aside from 512MB of RAM. A basic 2MP camera sits on its back, while a VGA snapper has been granted to its front.
With this phone allowing the use of social apps, the makers it seems did not want users of the original JioPhone to feel left out. They have hence revealed that it will be able to download these apps by August 15. Additionally, under a new Monsoon Hungama Offer, you will be able to exchange any old feature phone and get a brand new JioPhone for just Rs 501. That’s Rs 999 in savings, as the device costs Rs 1500 otherwise.
Here’s a list of essential specs of the JioPhone 2:
Display: 2.4-inch QVGA
RAM: 512MB RAM
Storage: 4GB (expandable up to 128GB)
Connectivity: VoLTE, VoWiFi, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth, FM radio

The JioPhone 2 will start being sold in India from August 15 onwards at a price of Rs 2999. And as for the Monsoon Hungama Offer for the original JioPhone, it will begin on July 21.
