Some huge news has been coming in from RIL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), with a bulk of the limelight being hogged by the launch of Jio GigaFiber broadband. Accompanying it is an internet connected 4K UHD set-top-box called GigaTV and a number of smart home devices that look ready to make the company an IoT powerhouse. Moreover, the firm has also announced its new super cheap 4G handset, the JioPhone 2.
Jio GigaFiber is the name chosen by RIL for its broadband service that has been in testing stages for two years. With speeds of up to a whopping 1Gbps, this package will go live sometime after August 15 in 1100 cities across India. Beta trials of GigaFiber have been conducted across the country, and it’s finally ready to be deployed for homes, small businesses and merchants. Jio is aiming to reach 500 crore homes and 3 crore merchants with this broadband service. Its pricing models have been kept secret for now.
Coming to GigaTV, this is an ultra-powerful set-top-box that will take advantage of Jio GigaFiber. Details about this device remain slim, but what we do know is that it will feature the ability to make video calls using your TV sets. It will ship with a Jio Remote that will enable voice commands to be delivered to your TVs. Of course, you can also expect other in-house services like JioTV and JioCinema to be integrated with it, but what comes as a surprise is the fact that 4K streaming and virtual reality content will also form part of the mix.
Another big move by RIL is the entry into the IoT space with Jio Smart Home Solutions. Several devices like audio and video dongles, smart speakers, Wi-Fi extenders, smart plugs, doorbells, surveillance cameras and more are under development from the company at the moment. These will work with GigaFiber to render a connected experience across your homes.
First to arrive among all these services will be Jio GigaFiber, registrations for which will commence on August 15. The first region for its arrival will be decided by the number of registrations it gets.
