RedHat has announced that it is discontinuing a traditional desktop product for the consumer market.
Instead, the company plans to now focus on desktop and client applications for business use to complement their main Linux server business.
RedHat’s blog read, “As a public, for-profit company, Red Hat must create products and technologies with an eye on the bottom line, and with desktops this is much harder to do than with servers. The desktop market suffers from having one dominant vendor, and some people still perceive that today’s Linux desktops simply don’t provide a practical alternative.”
Also RedHat announced that Red Hat Global Desktop (RHGD) has been delayed for an unspecified time. According to the company, technical side of the product is complete however few business issues are remaining to be solved.
The RHGD was announced at the 2007 Summit Conference.
