Path apologizes for mishandling user data, releases iOS update to amend it

Path App for iOS 01

Journal app Path, has recently issued an apology admitting that the way it handled information from user contact lists was wrong and it is sorry if that made iOS device owners uncomfortable. The company has also taken immediate steps to correct it by introducing a 2.0.6 version update which is meant to eliminate the feature of accessing and transmitting this data without prior permission.

It was recently noticed that the ‘Add Friends’ attribute of the original app was designed to access and store phone contacts by default from the Apple handset it was being used on. The app utilizes this data to notify customers about their friends joining Path. But since it did not require any specific prior permission for this, customers seemed to have no control over this function. Apparently, this was the reason some subscribers were upset with the software and conveyed the same to the company.

“In the interest of complete transparency we want to clarify that the use of this information is limited to improving the quality of friend suggestions when you use the ‘Add Friends’ feature and to notify you when one of your contacts joins Path––nothing else. We always transmit this and any other information you share on Path to our servers over an encrypted connection. It is also stored securely on our servers using industry standard firewall technology,” expressed Dave Morin, Co-Founder and CEO of Path in a recent post titled ‘We are sorry’ on the official Path blog.

By means of this apology, it has also been stated that the company will erase all the contact list information that it has stored until now without asking users. The new version is expected to notify iPhone owners about whether they want the application to access their data or not.
