If you’ve bought a USB Type-C cable from OnePlus for using it with smartphones other than the ones made by the company, it’s time you return it and grab a refund. These cables were recently found to be out of spec, which had resulted in quite an uproar.
It all started when Google engineer Benson Leung began a campaign to identify and point out all the bad USB Type-C cables in the market. Many were surprised to see the one made and sold by OnePlus making it into his list.
It has been found that the company’s USB Type-C cable and Type-C adapter both have a 10kΩ resistor which is potentially dangerous in the case of some devices. An ideal assembly must have a 56kΩ resistor. Despite all this, OnePlus CEO Carl Pei has said that the company’s USB Type-C cable and adapter are safe to use with the OnePlus 2.
However, with handsets like the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X that might not be the case. It’s hence that those who have bought cables from OnePlus for use with other phones should stop doing that and apply for the refund.

Those residing in North America and Europe have been asked to visit the company’s website in order to apply for their refund. OnePlus will then review their claim and send the money through PayPal. As for those residing in China and India, they will need to visit their nearest service center to turn in the cable and get their money back.
Amidst all this, OnePlus has announced that it’s in the process of creating new versions of its accessories which will now have 56kΩ resistors. Let us wait and watch when these will hit the market.
