OnePlus 6T box reveals waterdrop notch, in-display fingerprint sensor

The OnePlus 6T is looking more and more likely as the days go by. The latest proof has come in the form of pictures from Weibo showing off an alleged retail box for the handset.

It looks real enough, but then again it could easily be a hoax since it’s not impossible to make a fake retail box. The images suggest that the OnePlus 6T will look radically different from its previous variant. Instead of a rectangular notch at the top, it seems like the device is going to adopt a waterdrop-shaped cutout.

If this looks familiar, that’s because the Oppo R17 Pro has the same design. This is becoming a very common pattern with OnePlus. Oppo typically releases its flagship phone and OnePlus follows up with the same look a few months later. Both firms are owned by BBK Electronics and even use the same factories to make their handsets.

Another feature which the OnePlus 6T might borrow is an under-display fingerprint sensor. The leaked photos above hint as much, with a fingerprint logo and caption “Unlock The Speed.” It’s even printed on the side of the box, so we might hear it again as the phone’s marketing slogan.

OnePlus doesn’t always borrow the same specs as its sibling, but there are usually some similarities. For reference, the R17 Pro has a 6.4-inch OLED FHD+ display, a 25MP selfie camera, a 12MP + 20MP + TOF 3D stereo triple-lens setup, a Snapdragon 710 processor, and 8GB/128GB of storage. The 3700mAh battery can fuel up to 40% in just 10 minutes.

That last bit is probably going to make an appearance in the OnePlus as Dash Charge if these rumors turn out to be accurate. OnePlus recently began teasing a January 15 event via its Weibo page, but it’s not clear if the OnePlus 6T will be announced that day.
