OnePlus has some exciting news for owners of the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. The 2016-era phones are going to get updated to Android P after all.
To recall, OnePlus had previously announced that all it phones would be getting at least 2 years of software updates and 3 years of security patches. Many assumed the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were out of the picture as a result. The pair got launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow inside and have since been updated with Nougat and Oreo.
OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T Android P Update
This will make Android P the duo’s third major Android promotion. That’s a rare feat nowadays, with most manufactures not going beyond one. As per OnePlus’ forum post, it’s going to skip Android 8.1 for the phones so that it can focus its development resources on the Android P project.
This makes sense, especially since Android P’s announcement is probably a few weeks away now. It wouldn’t make sense to roll out Android 8.1 at this juncture. OnePlus didn’t say when to expect Android P for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.
However, it did state that the handsets would get updated after the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5, and OnePlus 5T. The first notably already has access to Google’s Android P beta and should receive the official build not long after the software’s release.

Taking into account a few months for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T’s Android P release, the OS should arrive for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T within the first few months of 2019. This can’t be taken as fact though, so we’ll just have to wait and watch for an official announcement.
In the meanwhile, OnePlus recently rolled out OxygenOS 5.0.4 for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. The upgrade bundled some major camera improvements alongside the newest Android security patch.
