Nokia is secretly developing a new device with the code name A1 Plus, as per a new report. It might just turn out to be the long-in-the-works Nokia 9 which has been rumored for months.

HMD Global is apparently working with Foxconn on the A1 Plus, also known as the A1P or AOP. This name might be significant since the company’s last flagship, the Nokia 8 Sirocco, was referred to as the A1N internally. Unlike its predecessor, the upcoming phone is set to sport a Snapdragon 845 processor.

That’s not the biggest highlight of the smartphone though. WinFuture claims that the so-called Nokia 9 will feature a fingerprint scanner underneath its display. The company supposedly faced problems making it fast and reliable at first, but eventually solved the problem by using a thinner glass cover on the LG-made OLED display.

The camera was reportedly another major issue on the Nokia A1 Plus. There were various hurdles to overcome and employees seemingly spoke about it being high risk internally. It’s not mentioned just what was making the module so difficult to produce. Word on the street is that it’s a triple-lens setup with 41MP, 20MP and 9.7MP sensors.

It seems HMD Global began work on the Nokia phone in February 2018, with the intention of unveiling it in the middle of 2018. It’s clearly passed this deadline now, so perhaps the device will appear in the second half of the year. The good news is that it might arrive with Android P out-of-the-box.

WinFuture speculates that HMD Global will present the Nokia 9 to the world during the IFA 2018 which is taking place from 31 August to 5 September this year. There are mentions of an A1 Plus Euro edition of the handset, so the company is probably concentrating on Europe as a market, among others.
