HMD Global is reportedly getting ready to launch its most affordable smartphone yet in the form of a handset called the Nokia 1. The Nokia 2 has already come and gone, so the upcoming phone should be an even more stripped down version of it.

As it turns out, it seems HMD Global is hopping on the Android Go bandwagon for the Nokia 1. The program is more or less a lighter version of Android 8.0 Oreo which is meant for low-memory, simple devices. It was officially launched as Android Oreo (Go edition) earlier this month, so it’s still early days for the initiative.

Android Go is specifically meant for customers in emerging markets, so that will likely be the Nokia 1’s target audience. Russian journalist Eldar Murtazin has the scoop on the phone, taking to his Twitter account to reveal that the handset will come with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of ROM. It might sport specs like a 720p IPS screen, sufficient for an entry-level handset.

The Nokia offering will apparently be priced between RUB 4990 (approx $87 or Rs 5550) and RUB 5490 (about $95 or Rs 6110). As per his sources, Huawei is also working on a rival to the smartphone which could cost around the same.

The Nokia 1 will probably hit markets around the world starting from March 2018. HMD Global will have quite an extensive portfolio by then, ranging from the low-cost Nokia 1 to the premium Nokia 9. The latter is set to make its debut at some point in January, possibly January 19.
