With the Asus K009 showing up as a potential successor to the Nexus 7, we can finally shortlist one device from the many Google branded gadgets speculated for launch this year. The Asus tablet recently managed to attain certification from the FCC and an image has reached the web through the Bluetooth SIG.
There have already been numerous rumors pertaining to a refreshed Nexus 7 circulating the web. Back in March, an analysis expressed that the slate should be available before Apple releases a new iPad mini and the launch was predicted to take place this quarter. The aforementioned sources have specified that the Asus K009 will come with the currently available high-end processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 600 or APQ8064, as mentioned in documents.
The FCC has also made a mentioned of the term Nexus in its filings along with support for 4G LTE, while the latter went on to say that the Asus K009 will be an ‘easy carrying’ device with an aim to deliver a rich multimedia experience. The screen size is slated as 7 inches wide, but no details regarding the resolution have been provided. The current tablet has an HD panel and we expect its successor to take things up a notch with FHD visuals or 1,920 x 1,200 pixels as noted by a previous leak. If so, the pixel density will be increased to 323ppi from 216ppi.
According to Unwired View, the first image suggests that the Asus K009 has a slimmer bezel compared to the current 7-inch Google slate. Now, we come to the interesting part – What platform will it run? The latest Android version is definite, but will the new Nexus 7 pack 4.3 Jelly Bean or 5.0 Key Lime Pie? Things are already very confusing with regards to what the Mountain View giant has planned next for its mobile platform. So until October which is the predicted launch date for the latter OS, making assumptions is pointless.
Since the K009 has made it through the FCC and is even certified at the Bluetooth SIG, the possibility of it going official sometime soon is fairly large. The report also notes that the tablet should sell for a starting price of $229.
