Broadband voice and data telecom services provider, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) that operates in the metros of Delhi and Mumbai in India, has introduced an internet telephony or Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service for offering cheaper ISD calls to its subscriber base in India.
With the latest initiative, subscribers will be able to make calls to most countries at any unbelievable rate of just Re 1 per minute. So you can now call your family, cousins, buddies and perhaps even your enemy residing oversee from the comfort of your home through your fixed land line phones at just Re 1.
Branded Netfone, the service shall be available to about 150 countries. Calls to landlines and mobiles in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries will be for Re 1 per minute; and for Japan, Malaysia and many other countries it would be Rs 2 per minute. MTNL has joined hands with Aksh Optifibre to offer Netfone.
What’s more, you do not even need a PC or an internet connection at home to avail of the internet telephony service. An adaptor attached to the fixed phone converts the phone into an (IPD) internet protocol device.
But if you do have a PC then there’s some better news for you. You can subscribe to MTNL internet telephony and your international call rates drop down to as low as 10 paise per minute. It’s practically free!
“We are now all set to connect the people of our country with the world and I am confident that people would be delighted with the service and demand would certainly increase,” maintained R S P Sinha, chairman and managing director, MTNL, while launching the Netfone VoIP services.
“VoIP induction to MTNL’s list of services is the result of the relentless efforts to provide consumers the benefits of technology at the most affordable prices,” continued Sinha.
Initially, Netfone will be available on a prepaid basis and will also be available to all MTNL PCO holders.
There are two tariff plans: Plan VoIP 200, with monthly rental of Rs 200, having 400 minutes of SIP-SIP calls free and 20 paise subsequently; and Plan VoIP 400, which has a monthly rental of Rs 400, which includes 800 minutes of SIP-SIP calls free and 10 paise per minute thereafter.
MTNL is the first company in India to offer internet-telephony. In the past other companies wanted to do something on the same lines but were of course fretting the plausible loss of revenue.
