The OnePlus 6T is less than a week away, but that hasn’t stopped the company from hyping up the OnePlus 7. The brand’s co-founder Carl Pei shared the stage with Qualcomm recently to announce that it’s going to release a 5G-ready smartphone next year.
This isn’t a complete surprise since OnePlus has already confirmed its 5G plans for 2019. Announcing it at Qualcomm’s 4G/5G Summit 2018 makes things a bit more official, plus it gurantees a Snapdragon processor for the OnePlus 7. As reported by Engadget, the device will probably rely on the Snapdragon X50 modem with the downsized QTM052 mmWave antenna module.
OnePlus 7 – 5G First!
Pei believes OnePlus will be one of the first manufacturers to release a 5G handset in the world. Apparently, the company conducted 5G tests at Qualcomm’s San Diego headquarters back in August this year. The latter’s president, Cristiano Amon, claimed that at least two 5G flagships are expected to get launched next year.
OnePlus is almost certainly going to be one of them, but the other remains a mystery. A number of brands confirmed their commitment to 5G technology and the Snapdragon X50 modem at the summit, including Asus, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, LG, Motorola, HMD Global AKA Nokia, and Sony.
Samsung and Huawei are notably missing from this list. It’s possible the two are working on their own in-house chips to handle 5G connectivity. The Galaxy S10 is rumored to have a 5G variant, but it’s not clear if it’ll be released along with the rest or at a later point of time.
Xiaomi has confirmed that the Mi Mix 3 will support 5G and we’ll find out more about this when the device comes out on October 25. The OnePlus 6T will arrive next on October 29. The OnePlus 7 may launch in May 2019 like its predecessor, but it’s too early to say at the moment.
