HMD Global has begun sending out invites for a big event in London taking place on October 4. It hasn’t revealed what’s in store, but rumors suggest that the Nokia 7.1 Plus or Nokia 9 is making an appearance.
Both the Nokia 7.1 Plus and Nokia 9 have been leaking at a steady rate over the past few weeks. The former is the more likely candidate, though, since the latter has apparently gotten delayed to the next Mobile World Congress (MWC) which is set to kick off by the end of February 2019.
Nokia 9 or Nokia 7.1 Plus?
The Nokia 9 was supposed to arrive in 2018 as HMD Global’s premier flagship. However, the story goes that the company’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas didn’t think the device was perfect and decided to postpone its announcement. Disgruntled employees subsequently decided to leak it as revenge.
There’s no way to know if any of this is true at the moment. It would be a pleasant surprise if the Nokia 9 showed up on October 4, if only as a competitor to the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL which are coming out on October 9.

The Nokia 9 should be an interesting rival to the photography-centric Pixel series. The former reportedly has 5 cameras at its back. The Nokia 7.1 Plus probably won’t have anything of the sort. It’ll likely stick to having 2 lenses like most mid-rangers. It’s expected to sport a Snapdragon 710 processor, Android 9.0 Pie, and 6GB of RAM.
One enduring mystery regarding the Nokia 7.1 Plus is whether it has a notch or not. Previous speculation suggested that it doesn’t have one, but a more recent one (see above) suggests it does. Both the Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus have a cutout on their screen, so it makes sense for the Nokia 7.1 Plus to have one as well.
