HMD Global announced the Nokia 7.1 at a big event recently. Other than the smartphone, the brand also took some time out to detail just when Android 9.0 Pie is arriving for its current handsets.
To recall, Android Pie hit the Nokia 7 Plus last week after a lengthy beta period. At the time, HMD Global had promised that updates were due to arrive for the rest of its portfolio as well. It’s now made things a bit more clear by announcing when four of its most popular devices are going to get promoted.
Nokia Android 9.0 Pie Rollout
The process will kick off with the Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus in October. The Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco will follow up in November. No exact date has been specified yet, so owners will have no choice but to wait around for the update to hit their phone.
Interestingly, the Nokia 8 has already gone through two OS versions. It was launched on Android 7.1 Nougat back in October last year. It later got updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. This means that Android 9.0 will be its second OS update.
HMD Global has promised 2 years worth of OS updates, so it’s not clear if the Nokia 8 has reached the end of its update cycle with Pie or if there’s more to come. All recent Nokia smartphones are sold with a 2-year OS update guarantee and 3-year security update promise thanks to being a part of Google’s Android One program.
The first batch of Nokia devices weren’t part of Android One, but they did still come with a 2-year OS update pledge. HMD Global has already promised that all its early phones will get updated to Pie, but the release might be staggered over the next several months.
