Xiaomi announces launch date for Redmi 3

Xiaomi Redmi 3 Teaser

Xiaomi has officially confirmed the Redmi 3 is coming out on January 12 in China, nearly a year after it had launched its predecessor. This time round, the phone will flaunt a metal unibody design and be slightly bigger with a 5-inch screen size.

The announcement was made via Xiaomi’s official Weibo account. The teaser image which has been released by it reveals the Redmi 3 has a unique plaid design on its back panel. While the brand hasn’t given away any price details yet, the phone is expected to cost around CNY 699 (roughly $106 or Rs 7082).

The specs of the Redmi 3 had surfaced online through its TENAA certification back in December last year. As per Gizmo China, the handset will carry a 5-inch 720p screen and run on Android 5.1 Lollipop with a layer of the company’s MIUI 7.1 on top. It’s set to contain 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal space, with support for expansion via a microSD card slot.

A neat round-up of the rumored specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi 3:

– OS: Android 5.1 Lollipop-based MIUI 7.1
– CPU: octa-core 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6753/MT6755 Helio P10
– Display: 5-inch, 720 x 1280 pixels
– Memory: 16GB, expandable
– RAM: 2GB
– Camera: 13MP rear, 5MP front
– Battery: 4000mAh
– Connectivity: dual-SIM, 4G

Like the Redmi Note 3, the upcoming dual-SIM Xiaomi handset may also pack a 4000mAh battery. The addition of a bigger unit may also explain why the smartphone is beefier than the previous variant at 8.55mm. The new handset could feature a 1.5GHz octa-core processor, rumored to be either the MediaTek MT6753 chipset or the MT6755 Helio P10 CPU.
