Nokia Asha 501 price tagged at $99 sans taxes, dual SIM option in tow

Nokia at a global event in New Delhi announced the Asha 501 which will be part of the 500 series of handsets and it comes bearing a budget-minded price of $99. The device operates on a new platform which is christened with the same name as the brand. It is based on Series 40, but with a snapper and a more responsive experience.

The Nokia Asha 501 as is clearly visible in the image above, has a very Lumia inspired design. The fresh UI is said to be highly intuitive. Users will have the option of 2 main screens, namely home and Fastlane. While the former features a conventional design with an icon view, the latter provides content like recently accessed contacts, social networks and apps that are picked based on usage. It apparently aims towards providing owners a glimpse of their past, present and future activity.

Apart from the Xpress Browser application that compresses websites by up to 90% for reduced data consumption, the company has announced Xpress Now that’s a web-based recommendation service which can be downloaded through the store. There are a host of tools and services that are compatible with the new platform. They include CNN, eBuddy, ESPN, Facebook, Foursquare, Line, LinkedIn, Nimbuzz, Pictelligent, The Weather Channel, Twitter, WeChat and World of Red Bull. Users can also expect to find games from Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Indiagames, Namco-Bandai and Reliance Games.

Coming to the design, the Asha 501 is dressed in options of 6 shades such as red, green, cyan, yellow, white and black. The rear casing is removable and is given a durable built, while the display on the front which measures 3 inches wide has a scratch-resistant glass coating. The touchscreen is accompanied by a back button. In terms of dimensions, the phone measures 99.2mm x 58mm x 12.1mm and it weighs around 98 grams. The main highlight of the device is its battery life which is said to be 17 hours of talktime or 48 hours of standby on a single charge.

The Nokia Asha 501 is expected to go on sale globally starting next month priced at $99.
