Two mid-range Google phones in the works, codenames revealed

Google Pixel XL

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have arrived, but Google may not be done releasing new handsets yet. Two devices with fish-related codenames, Bonito and Sargo, have popped up on a teardown of ARCore 1.5, the software which makes AR experiences possible on Android phones.

As reported by Android Police, Google traditionally sticks to marine-based names for its Pixel phones, so it makes sense for these mysterious smartphones to have fishy monikers. Bonito actually emerged a few months ago in the rumor mills, with some expecting it to launch beside the new Pixel 3 range.

This clearly didn’t happen, but the fact that Bonito’s appearing in ARCore 1.5 likely means Google is actively working on it. Noted tipster Roland Quandt tweeted about the phone back in June 2018, claiming it would run on a Snapdragon 710 processor. He also noted that Bonito is a type of “medium-sized, ray-finned predatory fish.”

This suggests that Bonito won’t be a huge phablet and might fall within a mid-range price tag. As for Sargo, it’s a relatively tiny fish which can reach an average of 22cm in size. Perhaps Google is planning on making a smaller counterpart to the Bonito, just like its premium Pixel pair.

Based on the evidence gathered so far, Bonito and Sargo could be Android One or Android Go phones directly from the house of Google. The search giant relies on partners like Nokia to make One and Go devices at the moment, but there’s no reason it couldn’t take a crack at the market itself.

An Economic Times report from back in September 2018 had suggested that Google was making a mid-tier Pixel for India and other emerging markets. The device would take on OnePlus in the country. The OnePlus 6T starts at Rs 37999 and it seems the middle-of-the-road Pixel may vary somewhere between Rs 40000 and Rs 50000.
