Apple’s AirPods are probably getting an upgrade this September, two years after the original was released. You won’t have to wait till then to get a glimpse at them though, as there are now images of the wireless accessories beside their new wireless charging case hidden inside iOS 12.

9to5Mac’s Guilherme Rambo found the photos while analyzing the latest iOS 12 developer beta 5 build. The AirPods look the same, but they have the model identifier AirPods1,2 now. This clearly sets them apart from the first-gen AirPods1,1.

AirPods Charging Case Changes

The AirPods charging case is where things get interesting since the LED light is on the outside instead of the inside. The previous variant forced users to open the case every time they wanted to check if the earphones were charged, so the new position should be welcome news.

The case glows orange when charging and green when finished. We actually saw an official glimpse at this last year when Apple announced the AirPower mat. The accessory is capable of fueling up an iPhone, the AirPods, and an Apple Watch at the same time.

Unfortunately, the AirPower apparently ran into some trouble in the production process and is due to arrive in September, one year after it was announced. Now that everything has neatly lined up, it’s time to wonder what Apple’s game is here. Will it bundle the new AirPods charging case with the second-gen AirPods or will it sell the case separately?

Ideally, the pair should come together, but Apple may go either way. The case itself should be available on its own for individuals with the first-gen AirPods. As for the 2018 AirPods, rumor has it that they’ll be blessed with a new chip and hands-free Siri support.
