iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max go up for sale in India today

iPhone XS

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are all set to go up for sale in India today at 6 pm IST. Apple is reportedly changing its strategy this year, throwing open availability to smaller neighborhood shops as well as its exclusive Apple Premium Resellers and large retail chains.

Two senior industry executives told The Economic Times that Apple has imported roughly 1 lakh units of both the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The initial launch phase will focus on 12 cities including Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.

iPhone XS Max Outselling iPhone XS

Interestingly, it seems the larger iPhone XS Max is outselling the smaller iPhone XS in India, with one retailer claiming that around 70% of pre-booking demand was for the former. The same pattern has been observed in markets around the world. Even so, sales are probably going to be slow for the pair because of their astronomical price tag in the subcontinent.

The 5.8-inch iPhone XS starts at Rs 99900 (64GB), travels up to Rs 114900 (256GB), and ends its journey at Rs 134900 (512GB). The 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max begins at Rs 109900 (64GB), hikes up to Rs 124900 (256GB), and reaches its peak at Rs 144900 (512GB).

With numbers this high, it wouldn’t be surprising if the grey market for iPhones becomes even more active than previous years. Analysts and retailers believe that it could grow by double digits this year. Grey market rates are reportedly Rs 15000 to Rs 20000 lesser than the official rates.

On the online side of things, Flipkart (iPhone XS/iPhone XS Max), Airtel (iPhone XS/iPhone XS Max), Reliance Jio, and Paytm (iPhone XS/iPhone XS Max) are all selling the new handsets. Offers vary, with some like Flipkart promising 5% off on HDFC Bank credit card EMI transactions and others like Paytm promising up to Rs 25000 off on exchange.
