iPhone XS Max manual hints at AirPower launch

The AirPower might not be dead after all, at least that’s what the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max suggest. Apple has bundled the two with a ‘Getting Started’ guide which clearly mentions the wireless charging mat.

This might not sound like a big deal, but it is one if you look back at the AirPower’s history. The device was first announced in September 2017 and expected to arrive in 2018. Jump forward a year later and it’s nowhere to be seen. It even got scrubbed out of Apple’s website. The company refuses to talk about it as well, so there’s no official word about its status.

Apple AirPower: Dead or Alive?

Until now, that is. Developer Gavin Stephens posted an image of his iPhone XS Max’s manual which explains how to go about wirelessly charging the handset. It instructs users to “Place iPhone with screen facing up on AirPower or a Qi-certified wireless charger.”

This simple sentence could mean many things. One possibility is that Apple hasn’t given up on the AirPower and plans to release it at some point in the future. The brand wouldn’t make such a glaring mistake if it didn’t have any intention of releasing the mat.

The other possibility is that Apple printed these guides months ago when it assumed the AirPower would be ready by the time the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR made their debut. This clearly hasn’t happened, so maybe this really was a mistake on its part.

9to5Mac actually found some evidence of the first theory hidden within the iOS 12.1 beta code. The part of iOS in charge of managing the AirPower’s iPhone interface recently got updated. This is solid proof that Apple is still tinkering around with the accessory.

Apple is probably going to announce new iPads and MacBooks in October. Perhaps the AirPower will make a surprise appearance at the same event.
