This year’s iPhones are expected to be similar to last year’s iPhone X, but with a couple of major differences. One of the biggest changes expected is within the box since Apple is reportedly going to bundle a much faster 18W USB-C charger inside.

This is great news for anyone who’s had to wait patiently while their iPhone crawls towards 100% power. There were a few worried that Apple wouldn’t include the 18W charger as part of the package and sell it separately. A new report by Japanese blog Macotakara dispels these worries, but adds a new one.

18W Charger Availability

As per supply chain sources, orders for the 18W charger will put factories at full capacity just to make components for the box. This will leave no room for extra production of standalone chargers. Apple stores may not have stock of the accessory to sell on its own as a result.

This won’t be an issue for people who buy one of the new iPhones, but it might annoy people with older iPhones. The iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus all support fast charging, but ship with ordinary chargers. Owners have had to buy a $78 29W USB-C adapter and USB-C to Lightning cable bundle to get the benefits of rapid charging.

Plus, there might be folks who want 2 chargers to have handy with their new iPhone. Even worse, certified third-party USB-C to Lightning cables may not appear until 2019 since the new Lightning chip ‘C48B’ is set to hit Apple’s MFi program in November or December 2018.

Apple has only certified 4 MFi manufacturing plants till date, so initial third-party supply may be low. Individuals can always opt for non-certified fast chargers, but as the company itself stresses, those can be very dangerous and cause explosions.
