iPhone 8 to feature glass back, wireless charging

The iPhone 8 is in the news again, this time because a fresh report alleges that the handset will sport a glass back. Not only that, the smartphone may also break with Apple convention and be released in three variants.

Talk of a trio of iPhone 8 models had emerged earlier this year. The Nikkei Asian Review is now reporting that these will be composed of a 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch, and all-new 5-inch unit. Apple has tentatively decided to bless all 3 with glass backs supplied by Biel Crystal instead of the metal one it currently utilizes.

The source behind the news claims that the shift to the material isn’t completely certain because Apple may change its mind further down the line. This may well happen, given the widespread rumor that the brand had meant to launch a single-camera iPhone 7 Plus variant but abandoned its plans six months before the smartphone’s unveiling.

The iPhone 8’s front and back glass surface will apparently be supported by a metal frame. The report further asserts that the company is planning to finally introduce wireless charging in the upcoming smartphone. This falls in line with an earlier rumor which predicted that it was going to axe the Lightning port in the handset to make sure the phone was completely sealed.

Unlike current wireless charging technology, Apple may be developing a technique which allows the iPhone 8 to be charged at a distance using near-field magnetic resonance. As per a patent it had filed in 2010, the method would allow a product like an iMac to be used as a charging hub to power a device 1m away.
