Apple CarPlay embeds iOS features onto your dashboards

Apple has today unveiled CarPlay, which has been aimed by the company towards providing a ‘smarter, safer and more fun’ way to use an iPhone while driving your vehicles. Select cars have been equipped with special integration of this new technology which provides touch and Siri-based access to some of your smartphone services.

Apple CarPlay will be added to iOS 7 by means of a software update, while screens on the cars will be able to connect to the iPhones through their Lightning connectors. Once that’s done, users will be able to access their contacts, make phone calls, return missed calls and even listen to voicemails. Once a message or a notification arrives, you’ll be able to respond to it using only your voice.

Perhaps one of the best uses of Apple CarPlay will come via its integration of Maps. Getting directions, anticipating destinations based on recent trips via contacts, emails or texts and providing routing instructions, traffic conditions and ETA will be some of the functions users of CarPlay will be blessed with. And ease of use will of course be brought in by Siri integration.

And then of course, there’s support for music, podcasts, audiobooks and iTunes Radio. As of now, Apple CarPlay has been pushed into select vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo which are on showcase at the Geneva International Motor Show. Other car manufacturers too are in line to get this new technology.
