iPhone 3GS hit “free for all” status on Best Buy

One of the most unlikely-sounding announcements has surfaced from Best Buy with the company’s offering of the Apple iPhone 3GS smartphone that comes with a price tag of ‘Free,’ exclusively for 24 hours. According to a post up on the Best Buy forum, users can pick up the device from any Best Buy Mobile specialty store, accompanied by a 2 year contract from AT&T.

The acclaimed ‘fast and a highly powerful’ smartphone has made a long journey since its launch back in 2009, to where it currently stands. Keeping the statement ‘Out with the old, in with the new’ in mind, it appears that the free offering from Best Buy is to quickly clear their shelves for the upcoming iPhone 5 handset.

As stated on the official forum, “On Monday, Aug. 22, customers will be able to get a free AT&T 8GB iPhone 3GS at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores. This exclusive one-day offer is available in-store only on Monday, Aug. 22 either as new or upgrade with two-year activation while supplies last.”

The iPhone 3GS comes with a specification list comprising a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touch screen, HSDPA at speeds of 7.2Mbps, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, A-GPs and is powered by the 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and the PowerVR SGX535 GPU. Also, considering the fact that users will have to utilize the smartphone for two whole years, chances are the handset may go outdated way before even meeting its contract terms.

The iPhone 3GS is available for free exclusively at Best Buy outlets alongside a two-year contract from AT&T.
