LG working on a new handset with curved display

Fans of the LG G Flex series of curved smartphones will be disappointed to hear a third edition of the handset is not expected to be released at all next year. Instead, the company may launch a completely new arched phone with a different design aesthetic.

This news comes via Evan Blass, who used his Twitter handle @evleaks to dish on the rumored handset. He didn’t go into many details, only mentioning that LG is working on a phone with a curved display which will wrap over the top of the smartphone. That’s quite a big leap from the G Flex lineup, which has a bent body but confines its display within the front panel.

The new LG phone’s style sounds like it has more in common with the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge+. The Samsung devices utilize a dual-edged screen which curves around both sides of the phones. Based on the information we have about the LG device so far, its display might go around the front of the device right to its back.

Of course, there’s no way of knowing if that’s going to be the case or if the phone is actually in development. A bent screen would certainly stand out from the straight panels with bezels we’ve been seeing from handset manufacturers for years at this point. It would further offer more phone real estate, which is usually a good thing to have more of.

With regards to the LG G Flex 3, while it was predicted to be unveiled during CES 2016 in January, a recent report had suggested it’s not making an appearance during the event. There’s no indication from the company that the series has been discontinued, though, so future units are still possible.

GForGames further claims the LG G5 will debut in April 2016 and a sequel to the dual-screen LG V10 will come out in the second half of the same year. There’s no launch date set for the curved LG phone as yet. We’ll keep you posted on any developments regarding the rumored smartphone.
