LG to manufacture Google Pixel XL 2

There’s a new rumor about the Pixel XL 2 doing the rounds on the internet, hinting that the phone will be manufactured by LG and not HTC as expected. The latter may still be in charge of the smaller Pixel 2, but things are pretty uncertain overall.

To recap, Google was reportedly working on 3 Pixel successors this year, but decided to cancel the middle-of-the-road option, Muskie, in favor of Taimen, a much larger phone. It was initially not known why the company decided to do so, but it seems the rejected device was not meeting expected battery life and other cost effectiveness targets.

9to5Google has now come out with a new report which cites information from the public-facing Android Issue Tracker. An LG employee brought up a USB PD Compliance Failure problem in April and was responded to by a Google employee who asked them to close the bug and open a more private one under Android > Partner > External > LGE > Taimen > power.

Other than this solid piece of evidence, Android Police’s David Ruddock has also backed up 9to5Google’s claims by citing his own sources. Previous rumors had indicated that Google was investing KRW 1 trillion (roughly $880 million) into the South Korean firm to secure flexible OLED displays for the next Pixel.

Going by the recent leak, LG’s attachment to the Pixel XL 2 may go beyond its screen. Google had done something like this before with the LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-produced Nexus 6P. It’s even possible that the next generation of Pixels won’t have the same design since each might be made by a different company.
